1. LINE THE WALLS OF YOUR STORAGE UNIT
Storing your possessions along the outer walls first will be a major benefit to you when you find your storage unit getting full. If you must access your items while in limbo make sure to Leave aisles between different rows of items so you can still access everything. The last thing you want is to have to rummage through a full storage unit to find a box hidden in the back somewhere!
2. PACK YOUR STORAGE UNIT HIGH
If you plan to store any large furniture, such as dressers, china cabinets, couches or even bed frames, ensure those items are using primarily vertical space. Standing bulky items on end helps maximize less-used vertical space and allows you to fit more inside your self-storage unit. Consider packing your items in the same sized boxes to help maximize the space of your unit, and to stabilize the high walls of boxes and furniture you build in your storage unit with your items. Packing vertically is important because no one wants to pay additional monthly costs on another storage unit. Save money and maximize the space in your storage unit by properly packing the unit.
When you are maximizing vertical space, remember to place large, heavy items on the ground and place lighter boxes on top to prevent crushing the box’s contents.
We at JR Moving Services are professionals at maximizing space and making sure a unit is properly packed. Check out Freddy’s (Customer of ours) unit when we were all said and done.
3. PROTECT YOUR FURNITURE & SMALL MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
How you store furniture can make or break your space. Properly wrapping your furniture is key. taking extra precautions like using mattress and sofa slips to cover wooden furniture will keep items clean and dust-free. After your furniture is properly covered, you may be able to stack some low-weight items on top of your furniture to help use vertical space. Storing items in sealed reusable plastic containers rather than cardboard boxes has multiple benefits. Not only do plastic containers absorb moisture a lot better, but it is also better for the environment. Make sure Position furnishings away from the storage unit door where fog or rain might seep in.
Taking the time to store electronics in their original packaging and double-wrap the container with shrink-wrap can save you money. Make sure to be patient and take the time to Double-wrap all furniture with plastic or shrink wrap, especially if utilizing a storage unit that is not climate controlled. You could even go the extra mile and cover the floor with a vapor barrier such as plastic sheeting. If you have time and really want to take that extra precaution you may want to consider waxing wooden furniture to increase its moisture resistance.
Antique furniture, regardless of how it is stored, may not fare well without climate control because older finishes deteriorate when subjected to extreme temperatures.
